FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. How can I show my support for F-35 Mission in Idaho?
Complete the online support form at www.IdahoF35.com. Speak up when the federal government seeks public comment from community stakeholders during the citizen participation portion of the environmental impact study. Your feedback and support matters a great deal in the selection process.
2. Why should I care about protecting the future mission of Mountain Home Air Force Base and Gowen Field?
First, the defense of America is undeniably a proper role of government. It’s critical that our military personnel are prepared in the best possible manner to respond when and where the need arises. The Idaho climate, our extensive airspace, sophisticated training ranges and existing facilities are the absolute best choice for timely, and cost efficient training to fly the next generation of jet fighters.
Second, due to the economic challenges currently facing our state, it is crucial we protect the health of Idaho’s military partners. Gowen Field and MHAFB collectively generate more than $1.2 billion in economic impact each year. As the State’s second largest employers -- we need to protect that economic base!
3. Are there noise issues relating to the F-35?
The Air Force Research Lab, working with Lockheed Martin, conducted an aircraft acoustics study on the F-35 in October, 2008 at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The study found the takeoff and flyover noise generated from the F-35 comparable to the F-22 and F-18, but slightly louder (less than 10 percent) than the F-15s currently stationed at MHAFB. The acoustic levels experienced by the public depend on a number of conditions - including topography, weather (temperature, humidity and wind), time of day, observer location in relation to the aircraft, length of time listener is exposed to aircraft, etc.
4 What are the impacts of the Air Force bringing the F-35 Missions to Idaho?
There will be a positive impact to the state’s economy through additional civilian employment and construction jobs, wages, consumer spending and investments. The mission will create construction related projects using local labor and suppliers of construction material. Also, Idaho’s military personnel and their families will spend money within the state. More visits will be generated, contributing to local and State tourism dollars. A large amount of goods and services will be purchased locally, with private-sector companies, both large and small. The F-35 Missions locating to Idaho will ensure our state continues to play a critical role in our nation’s defense and security.
The Air Force wants and appreciates your comments.
